Judaism, Christianity, Islam: Comparison & Contrast
Starts Jan 15
Sun, 10am | Rm 211
Instructor: Dr. Jim Lindsay
Description:
This course examines some of the parallels and differences in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim conceptions of God, revelation, sacred history, prophets, etc. Our principal focus will be on how Jews, Christians, and Muslims have understood the roles of ancient biblical heroes such as Adam and Eve; Noah; Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar; Ishmael, Isaac, and Rebecca; Jacob, Leah and Rachel; Joseph; Moses; and David. In other words, we will learn how Jews and Christians–who share a common scripture–read it in quite different ways at times. We will also learn how the Qur’an incorporates many of these same heroes into the core beliefs and practices of the Islamic tradition. We will conclude with a comparison of the role of Jesus in the Gospels and Christianity with the dramatically different role that Jesus plays in the Qur’an and Islam.
